JP's Blog

About this blog

Here you can find tales from ideas I try, projects I sometimes finish and maybe a few rants here and there. Most things should be english but sometimes there will be a german article as well.

Why a blog in 2025

There are a lot of reasons why you shouldn't have your own blog.

I mean the whole internet mostly consists of the same few sites that everyone uses and that try to keep you watching whatever to milk your attention for ad money.
Want to make videos? Youtube
Stream live? Twitch
Want to rant about the stuff you hate about a site on the same site (cut in blocks of 280 chars)? twitt... wait I mean X
Are you 50 and belive the earth is flat? sigh... facebook
What about 13 and just want your phone to give you dopamine? tiktok
And even if you host your own site, will people even find it below the piles of SEO optimized AI slop sites?

I could stand here, list sites and rant all day about big tech and how they ruined the internet but thats story for the actual blog.

Back to the topic:
Hosting and domains cost money I mean not much and there are even free options these days. But more important it costs time to create and manage a blog. Yes, there are options that give you ready made templates where you can just start writing, but then you have the same blog as everyone. Certainly an option but not for me. The other option is a lot of options.
Where to host? own server, vps hosting or the cloud, the possibilities are endless
Which software to use? Do I need a full framework like react, do I use a static site generator or just freewheel it in pure html/css
How to keep everything secure? depends on the hosting solution

But if everything is so bad, expensive and complicated and nobody will probably ever read it, why do I still create and host this blog and especially in way that is a lot more work than one of the thousands of easy made solutions?
I create this blog not to show off my looks, my skills or any projects I created. When I write my opinions here it's just that, an opinion of a random guy in the internet. It's not about the blog it's about the experience insert joker gif. I want to use this blog to learn, learn how to setup a stable webpage, to use CI tools for automatic deployment, to host something that you could actually call useful. And the best case would be that it actually looked like something. Also I try to document my projects better and publish updates to motivate me to finish them. And maybe there are even a few people intrested in what I do. Or this whole thing is just shouting in the void
